Fabric in Landscape

Fabric In Landscape is a photography project completed between 2000 and 2009.   Six-yard lengths of tulle fabric were spread, draped, hung, or thrown over landscapes in each of the 50 states and photographed.  An urban series and a continental series are ongoing.  Aesthetically, the photographs make very large and simple “brushstrokes” with fabric in a scene, using basic principles of design such as contrast, repetition and emphasis with lines, shapes and colors occuring in nature.  Technically, the photographs were shot with a Nikon SLR using Velvia professional chrome film.  They were digitally scanned and printed up to 20 x 30 inches.  Historically, the series nods to Christo who puts fabric in landscape in a performative and collaborative way, and to the seriality and documentary aspects of such artists as Ed Ruscha.  In addition, the conceptual basis is banal and ironical in that they are touristy “pretty pictures.”
